밤섬해적단

 약속이 쉬이 잡힐 때가 있는가 하면 연락을 몇 번이고 주고받아도 좀처럼 만나기 힘들 때가 있습니다. 밤섬해적단은 작업에 흔쾌히 동의했지만, 이 유망한 밴드를 만날 장소를 정하기란 험난한 길이었습니다. 밴드는 계절학기 중인 대학교 강의실에서 촬영하고 싶어하지 않았고, 우리는 동네 교회와 불화를 빚고 싶지 않았고, 모 합주실은 장비의 실외 반출에 난색을 표했고, 밴드의 공연이 잡혀 있던 요기가 갤러리는 우리가 상상한 모습과 달랐습니다. 이렇게 한 달간 문자만 주거니 받거니 하던 차에 자주 가는 술집이 드럼과 앰프를 장만한 걸 보고 요거다! 싶어 사장님과 이야기를 진행했고, 마음씨 좋은 사장님은 기꺼이 자리를 내주셨습니다. 하지만 위층에서 내려온 시끄럽다는 항의를 무릅쓰고 얻은 결과물에는 치명적인 기술적 결함이 있었으니, 낭패도 이만저만이 아니었습니다. 재촬영을 해야만 했습니다.

 Some people are quite reachable while some others are just very difficult to get a hold of; Bamseom Pirates were one of the former, but finding a place for this promising band was such a pain in the butt. They didn't want to play in a classroom during winter session, we didn't want to get into trouble with local churches, some rehearsal studio couldn't bother to put their instruments outside, and Yogiga Gallery, where they had a show, was somewhat different from what we had imagined. When it had been almost a month since we started calling and texting each other we saw a drum set and amps at a bar we hang out often and we were like, 'this is the place!'. The boss let us very kindly while the people from upstairs seemed pretty pissed at the loud music, which was quite a nuisance. But more than anything else, there was a major mistake with the sound recording, which we found out afterwards and was very devastating. WE HAD TO SHOOT EVERYTHING AGAIN.

 먼 길을 돌아 마침내 우리는 밤섬해적단의 지하 합주실로 내려갔습니다. 폐허와 권용만이 몰아치는 연주 사이로 후크송을 토해냈고, 두 청년은 힘들다며 숨 고를 시간을 달라더니 정체 모를 만담을 늘어놓기 시작했습니다. (어느 쪽인지는 모르겠지만) 날카로운 이념과 유쾌한 조롱으로 무장한 이들의 가사는 유튜브 이곳을 통해 접할 수 있습니다.

 So we came a long way round to end up in Bamseom Pirates' practice room. Their music's got ear-catching hooks, spitted out through PYHA's powerful bass and Slowface's raging drums. The two young bloods wanted some time to breathe, then went on with jokes about Kim Gu a.k.a. Baekbeom's assassination of some Japanese guy and how we all should reflect on the example because of the Dokdo conflict, and dedicated the song to "Metal Kim Gu"! Their lyrics, armed with distinct mindset and playful sarcasm, are available(if your Korean is good enough) on Youtube their Cyworld community.
